A freestanding gas stove is the shortcut a lot of people miss. It gives you real heat and a proper flame without the framing, drywall and finishing that a built-in fireplace needs, which often makes it the most economical way to put fire in a room that has never had one.

What is here

Napoleon's GDS cast iron range, Regency's Hampton, Contura and Ultimate series, and Jotul's GF stoves, which bring Norwegian cast iron styling to gas. Sizes run from compact units around 20,000 BTU up to 44,000 for larger spaces.

The outage advantage

Several stoves here, including the Jotul GF 370, run with no electricity at all. In an ice-storm blackout the stove keeps burning and keeps the room warm, which is a genuinely useful trait in a Toronto winter and something a built-in with electronic ignition may not offer.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, yes. A freestanding stove skips most of the framing and finishing work a built-in requires. You still need a vent run and a TSSA-certified gas connection, but the construction side is far smaller.

Some do. Models with standing pilot or millivolt systems, such as the Jotul GF 370, need no electricity and keep running through an outage. Units with electronic ignition depend on batteries or power.
